Bird of the Week

One of the key benefits of Bird News Extra is the ability to view all the reports we've ever published about a particular bird – in effect a "history" of the bird. Every sighting we report has a corresponding "details page", accessible via the details button button, that provides this information. If you're thinking of going to look at a bird, this will give you a good idea of when and where it's been seen, and how likely you are to catch up with it.

Details pages also include additional useful content:

  • Thumbnail images of any photographs we've received of the bird (with links to larger versions)
  • First and last dates (as far as we know them)
  • Links to related reports (e.g. other reports of the same species)
  • Links to related historical reports (to help you put the bird in context – just how rare is it?)
  • Brief site details (with grid reference, nearest postcode, a link to a map and to more information if we have it)
  • A list of recent and nearby rarities that you might also try for
  • Links allowing you to post updates, make comments or ask questions about the bird

Print off the Details page, and a copy of the online map, before you leave and we hope you'll have all the information you need for a successful birding trip.

Details pages are only available to Bird News Extra subscribers. However to give you a better idea, we make one notable bird available to everybody each week. Our current "Bird of the Week" is:

Amur Falcon at St. Buryan (Cornwall)
